We have come to realize one important thing while working for so many years with dental implants. Several patients who have had chemotherapy were not warned about the possible side effects on their mouths, like tooth decay, falling teeth, gum infection and more.
These are real comments taken from cancer survivors about their teeth:
“In my case it was a situation where I was not going to have good teeth after the chemo or if I had it stopped, I wouldn’t be around to enjoy my pretty teeth.”
“I was only 15 when I started chemo, and now at 23, my teeth are wrecked…”
“I wasn’t told about the effect on your teeth either although it would not have mattered since I was more interested in surviving the breast cancer. I have several teeth that have crumbled down to the gum and one that is half gone.”
“When you smile, they only see the teeth that are missing. . . and not the months of poisoning that caused it, or the courage it takes to show the world your smile.”
It is heartbreaking to hear something like this. After all the courage and strength that they had to muster to get through with their cancer treatment, the prospect of not smiling again shouldn’t not be one of their problems.
We truly feel privileged that several cancer survivors have placed their trust in us to restore their smiles with dental implants. Single implant, bridges or a full bar can make all the difference. There’s nothing that can compare to that tug in our hearts when after the procedures we bring them a mirror and… there it is: the smile they missed so much. It is sometimes hard to keep the tears off our eyes when this happens.
